Beware Fall Roofing Problems

Fall is truly a beautiful time of year. It’s also the time where most roofing problems occur. With the change of weather and the fall of debris on the roof, there are all kinds of issues that can pop up during the season. Thankfully, most of these problems can be avoided by following some standard maintenance roofing tips. So this fall, make sure to beware of these three fall roofing problems and follow these top roofing tips to keep your house safe and protected from potentially expensive repairs:

Clogged Gutters

This is probably the most common issue homeowners experience during the fall. Clogged gutters are easy to avoid, and yet if you don’t clean out your gutters, it can lead to all kinds of problems. When the gutter is clogged, water is more likely to push up under the shingles of your roof, which will lead to flooding, leaking, the development of mold and all kinds of other issues. It may also begin to weigh down on your gutters, which, especially after heavy rain (and if it freezes during the winter months), can pull down from the roof, causing structural damage to the gutters and roof.

All of this can be avoided by cleaning out your gutters. It’s important to clean out your gutters twice a year. You’ll want to do so once in the fall and once in the spring. This is one of the roofing tips that will go a long way toward helping you avoid costly repairs and roof damage later on down the line.

Roofing Leaks

Spring and summer bring the harshest stormy weather of the year. Higher winds and severe weather are more likely to strike during this time of the year than during fall and winter. The severe weather can leave areas of your roof damaged. It can be anything from exposed shingles to physical damage where debris might have struck the roof of your home. This makes the fall season the perfect time to have your roof inspected and the damaged areas replaced. You want to take care of it before the temperatures drop and heavier rain or even snow begins to fall.

One of the most important roofing tips to follow is to have your roof inspected during this time of the year. It’s far easier (and cheaper) to perform spot repairs on damaged shingles than to suffer through a winter of leaks, which can lead to mold and all kinds of other costlier problems.

Falling Debris

Spring and summer brought with it beautiful weather and plenty of plant growth. However, this plant growth may have brought some of the tree branches over your roof. This can be a problem if you don’t have the trees trimmed back. The heavier branches may break under winter storms and snow, damaging your roof.

It also makes it easier for critters to find their way onto your roof and begin excavating a new home. So take the fall time to trim back the trees to a healthy distance from your roof.
